    The key points you described are right on point. One thing I will add is knowing how to manage money and record keeping. That is one thing that difficult for a web designer to do. I know it’s been a struggle for me. I finally found a software that is affordable and reliable. http://www.outright.com

    I have two questions:
    Do you think it is beneficial to obtain a BA degree in design if the person rather freelance or own their own company?

    Also, do you feel a business plan is essential?

    Sweet! “Internet Marketing” Now that’s a nice term. Mike, would you consider Facebook and Twitter under Internet Marketing?

    @Siedah – A BA degree isn’t necessary. I explain my thoughts in an old video blog here:

    Web Design Degree, Is It Neccessary?

    Also, a business plan isn’t required as I’ve never written one, but it sure does help if you have one.

    @Jose – Facebook and Twitter can be key parts to an internet marketing strategy. Same with Youtube. For example, I use Youtube as a huge part of my Internet Marketing strategy. All popular social networking sites can be beneficial if used correctly.

    @Mike

    A business plan isn’t required but it should be strongly suggested. A business without a business plan is like a chicken without a head. How do you know if you’re on track? You can’t, because there is no track. Planned growth is always better than growth.

    Regardless, I would love to start a web design/development business, and considering some of the amazing UI work you’ve done, I’m strongly considering buying your training course.

    @Mike Great advice as usual! You also mentioned that it’s a good idea to re- build sites you like, instead of going after client projects which may not interest you.

    Do you mean re- building things in PS or FW only or does this also include the writing the html/css for those sites?

    Thanks

    Keep up the good work

    @Leon – Just the design, not the actual coding of the sites. Just design mock-ups for clients. The coding comes after you get the deal. ;)
