In this video I talk about how web design galleries doesn’t fully represent the work UI/UX Designers do on a daily basis or represent the sites that are used by the masses on a daily.
Reached out to you about 1.5 years ago for advice on getting to that next level in my design career. I’m at that next level now and very happy I did the due diligence and just went for it. You were the right person to talk to at that time, and glad you’re still spreading the gospel.
On that note, congratulations on making moves with Adobe. I was pleasantly surprised to see your tutorial videos on the new Adobe XD release.
Great vid Michael. Dont you think there should be a sweet spot to balance aesthetic and needs for the project? Dont you think it depends on projects too, for example like small biz, they tend to like those gallery type sites.
This is where fellow designers can get all snobby. Those who do practical designs can be looked down upon as lesser talents. But, you are right, that’s where all the money is.
A friend of mine started a company doing a lot of practical, ui ux type project and is thriving. She has about 10 people working for her. It’s a departure from her previous work as a high end minimalist designer.
Another mutual friend of ours commented to me in private that it was so sad that this person was doing such uninspiring work.
Considering that her husband doesn’t make a lot of money and now they have a growing family to support, I think she made a smart move.
Her clients are happy, she’s happy, so what’s the problem?
This is the equivalent of Haute Couture never making money and sales from Prêt–à–Porter doing all the financial heavy lifting.
Cheers!

Hey Mike,
I have started following you few months ago..Your videos are really helpful specially when it comes to UI/UX ..i am now much better designer because of your guidelines. I have a question Mike that when i see here in Dubai,United arab emirates that people who have masters degree in design & Ux and other certification is on good jobs like with big companies but their work is dull when i compare it even with my work. So do we really had to have a degree in designs but not to have a creative mind ? Or companies prefer degree over work quality ?
Hope you would answer.
