In this episode I talk about the required skills needed for becoming a Web Designer. In doing so, I explain the required skills and differences between a Freelance Web Designer, UI Designer and a Web Developer / Front-end Engineer. I get many questions about this subject and many times people confuse the required skills between a UI Designer and a Web Developer (Front-End Engineer). Hopefully I can clear it up a bit with the things I discuss in this podcast.

Thank you Mike for your podcast. I will choose second column because I feel I like to design more then writing code. After listening this podcast, this really makes me clear.

I want to be UI/UX designer

    Thank you Mike

Great podcast, very informative. I’m an aspiring Graphic Designer myself and I see on a lot of job roles that you need to know HTML and CSS.
Even though I’m more artistic than a coder I’ll definitely be considering you in the future.

Since responsive web design, I see a shift on what being discussed about skill set. I agree there is no way you can learn it all and you should focus in the areas you discussed according to your own goals. Thanks for keeping me on track and focused.

Love these podcasts Mike. I like both the design and coding aspects of creating websites. I’ve struggled for a few years now trying to learn both and it’s really hard.

I’m thinking of focusing more towards the front-end developer role but will still continue with the graphic design aspect too for freelance work.

Thanks for putting up the podcasts, just left you a rating on iTunes.

Great podcast, mike. I’m following your track and going for UI/UX with web on the side. I’ve split my learning time to 50% UI principles, 25% web design and 25% HTML/CSS/Jquery. I find that many UI jobs list Jquery as a requirement, plus knowing how to use the Jquery library is great for websites.

Great podcast, Mike. I put myself under the freelance title (and a newbie at that). With young kids this is perfect for me because it allows me to make my own schedule, do my stay-at-home Daddy role, be involved as much as possible with my kid’s education and sporting events.
I’ve got a bit of an advantage having a wife with a good steady income, so my income is really just a party fund.
Eventually when my kids don’t need or want anything to do with parents I hope to ramp up my freelance biz and move into a UI/UX role with better income.
Thanks again for all your help.

I will have to prepare for a job interviews very soon and to be honest I don’t have a clue how such a interview might look. I’m sure that many people don’t know it and I was thinking that maybe you could share your experience with us;)
Great Podcast! I really recommend your Web Design Course!

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for an insightful podcast. I really enjoy graphic design but also have a programming background. I’ve decided to focus on a career in web development while doing freelance web design on the side. Thanks again for providing clarity on these roles.

You have literally changed my life Mike.
We have emailed before, and the words you told me, and continue to tell me in your videos and podcast have literally changed the way I will do things.
They say we all need heros and someone to look up to,
    you are that for me.
Look to hear plenty more from me.
    Thanks.
