It is certainly a plus and a good add on to your resume and have the abilities to back it up.

By all means, brag that you don’t have a college degree, have two cars and a wife that doesn’t work. I’m proud that I only attended college for a year, but regret that I didn’t quit earlier. I don’t have outstanding debt in a tough economy, I have a great job, and have more job experience which has made me more attractive to future employers.
Your points were good. Something that I would add is simply enroll in graphic art classes at your local college, instead of going for the degree and taking several unrelated classes because of requirements. Also, be careful what college you attend. Generally, colleges don’t like creativity, so it’s a great way to find out what colleges would fit your design and learning style.
